Classic 1840s ballgown shape, with the amazing tightly tailored look of that decade. Too bad the dress doesn’t really fit on her mannequin! It’s interesting how the gathered waist actually follows the point in the front (see pictures at the link above) — what an unusual way to create this gown! I guess it ensures that the pointed front waist actually lies flat. The extremely pointed waist is similar to my wedding dress (which was actually based on a gown from slightly later, 1852). I just had the front point lie over the gathers in the dress though (the skirt was whipstitched to the bodice lining).
